Resident Artist: Julie Higgins

Women’s History Month is upon us, and we here at the girl & the fig are honored to work with many incredibly strong, intelligent, talented women. Among these women is our resident artist, Julie Higgins.

Julie Higgins was born and raised in Hutchinson, Kansas, and attended University of Kansas, majoring first in ceramics and later in sculpture and painting. After college, Julie moved to the Skagit Valley in Washington State, where she began seriously working with pastels, in an effort to capture the color and composition of the landscape around her. Later moving to Mendocino, California, helping her to further evolve in her work, finding inspiration in the sensuality of the ocean, redwoods, vineyards, and rolling hills.

Julie Higgins’ first exhibit at the girl & the fig was in the summer of 1998 at the original location in Glen Ellen. 20+ years of wonderful collaboration later, Julie shows year-round at both the girl & the fig, and the fig café & winebar, gracing our walls with her vibrant, colorful, sensual, unmistakable works of art.

Julie cites the girl & the fig as a source of inspiration for her pieces. The woman in her work remains unnamed, though she does refer to her as “Juicy, Earthy, Woman.” This is Julie’s vision and portrayal of women, as well as parts of herself. Through “Juicy, Earthy, Woman,” Higgins evokes a woman’s range of character; playful, sensual, and voluptuous, all while maintaining power and goddess energy. “Juicy, Earthy, Woman” is a healer and mother energy, playing many roles, as all women do.

Julie’s work has been featured on figFOOD products, note cards, and on the “Tres Bonnes Annees” California Syrah. Framed originals, as well as prints, that are on display at both the fig and the café, are available for purchase off the wall.
