Gundlach Bundschu - A Sonoma Landmark

The oldest continuously family-owned winery in California, Gundlach Bundschu has been making wines since 1858 and is rife with history. The 6-generation operation is a legendary and lovely destination and event location in the Sonoma Valley.
The beautiful 320-acre estate was originally purchased in 1858 by Bavarian immigrant Jacob Gundlach, who christened the land "Rhinefarm." According to Gundlach's press materials, the land was under Mexican rule a mere 11 years prior. A decade later German-born Charles Bundschu married Jacob's daughter and a family business was born. The burgeoning operation saw success early, growing throughout the latter half of the 1800's while headquartered in San Francisco with a thriving New York City branch to boot.

The operation was devastated by the Earthquake of 1906, which destroyed not only their business offices but also took over 1 million gallons of wine. By the time of the earthquake Gundlach Bundschu was a formidable US and international wine distributor, selling over 250,000 cases of wine a year. The family next survived Prohibition by planting pear orchards, raising cattle and selling their grapes to wineries making sacramental wine, all under the direction of Charles' son Walter. Post-prohibition, Walter's son, Towle, kept the family business thriving by selling wine grapes from the land and 1973 saw wine-making's triumphant return under the helm of Towle's son, Jim, the 5th-generation Bundschu. Presently Jim's son Jeff is CEO of Gundlach Bundschu, which now produces 40,000+ cases of 90+ point, acclaimed wine.
