Dungeness Crab Season is Back!
'Tis the (other) Season
It's that other special time of year on the beautiful West Coast: Dungeness Crab Season! Crab season is well under way, with droves of fisherman, both professional and recreational, hitting the waters off the California coast to grab the crab. Found all along the West Coast, the season for dungeness crab officially opened November 3rd for California's north coast and will run through June 30th of 2019. So, crab lovers can rejoice in knowing that the sweet meat will be available for this year's Christmas and New Year's feasts. There are many options on where and how YOU can go to nab your crab.
Crab season is not just for the professional fisherman. The most adventurous way to eat these tasty crustaceans is to head down to the pier for some crabbing. All you really need is a crab pot, some bait and a little free time and you'll be reeling these little fellas (Yes. Fellas. Females and adolescents have to go back to the sea!) out of the water and back to your kitchen. Incoming tide is the best time to catch them. If getting to the pier isn't in the cards for you, worry not! You can still get fresh dungeness straight from pros. Bodega Bay is a dungeness fishing hub and you can often times buy crab straight from the fisherman on the dock! Just make sure you time it right, or they'll likely be out on their boats. If you don't find your fisherman, there are droves of Crab Feasts during the season throughout the Bay Area. If you do a little research, you could practically find a Crab Feast for each day of the weekend from February through the end of March somewhere in the Bay Area. But, make sure to bring an appetite - most of these are all you can eat!
To celebrate the return of crab season, we will be kicking off the first of our 2019 Suite D "Road Trip Series" dinners with a San Francisco-style Crab Feast of our own on Saturday, January 26th. The dinner will feature a host of both dungeness crab and San Francisco-themed dishes including crab bisque shooters, petite crab cakes, a papaya, crab and avocado salad, SF style cioppino garlic bread, and lemon curd tart. The meal is $55 per person ($46.75 for Suite D and Wine Club Members) and begins at 5:30pm. Reservations can be made online at www.therhoneroom.com/product-page/road-trip-series-sf-crab-feast and by phone at (707)933-3000 ext. 10.
We hope you will let us bring this tasty tradition of San Francisco directly to you this January, saving you time from hitting the pier with your crab pot in order to get this tasty treat to your plates and mouths.
