Wine Wednesday: Westerhold Family Vineyards, 2010 Syrah, Bennett Valley
"Wine makes every meal an occasion, every table more elegant, every day more civilized."
-Andre Simon
This Week: Westerhold Family Vineyards, 2010 Syrah. Bennett Valley
About Westerhold Family Vineyards:
In 2006, John and Sharon Westerhold moved their family from Los Angeles to Sonoma County, with the dream of owning a vineyard in an area where they could put down roots and raise their family. When they arrived in Sonoma County, the Westerhold's discovered the perfect property in Bennett Valley, that also contained a small Syrah vineyard. It was then that Westerhold Family Vineyards began, and soon after the Westerhold's planted 3 acres of Pinot Noir.
A short time after moving in, the Westerhold's discovered that their neighbor, Russell Bevan, was an aspiring winemaker. He became a close friend of the family, and the winemaker of Westerhold Family Wines, creating wine exclusively from grapes grown on the family vineyard. Together, Bevan and the Westerhold's now craft Syrah and Pinot Noir, which each showcase the unique flavor intensities that come from the family estate site.
Tasting Notes:
This 2010 vintage Syrah has notes of roasted meats, spices, and white pepper, followed by beautiful floral raspberry and cherry flavors. There are secondary flavors of leather and spice as the Syrah grows over time. It is rich and round on the palette, with supple nuances and textures.
Pairings:
At the girl & the fig we’d recommend pairing Westerhold Family Vineyards, 2010 Syrah with our chicken & figs (roasted garlic, onions, fingerling potatoes, honey wine glaze) or croques monsieur (applewood-smoked ham, st. george cheese, quinoa & green salad).
At home try it with braised lamb, grilled hickory-smoked hanger steak, or honey-glazed chicken.
Cheers!
