Wine Wednesday: Frick Winery, 2014 Estate Counoise, Dry Creek Valley
"Wine makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance."
-Benjamin Franklin
This Week: Frick Winery, 2014 Estate Counoise , Dry Creek Valley
About Frick Winery:
With the money they earned from selling their 1957 Chevy, combined with the remainder of their savings accounts, Bill Frick and Judith Gannon purchased a Sonoma Valley winery in 1976. Together, they turned their investment into what is known today as Frick Winery. For Bill, the dream of becoming a wine-maker began at age 8 following a visit to a California winery while on vacation with his parents. He was mesmerized by the grapevines and the various wine-making processes. Today, Bill and Judith strive to employ traditional wine-making methods into their processes, with grapes harvested by hand and small oak aging.
Tasting Notes:
Aromatic and soft, this 2014 Counoise has aromas of earthy blueberry and black currant, with hints of Luxardo Maraschino cherries, savory marzipan, fresh prune, black fig and vanilla. Since 2014 was a drought year here in California, this vintage is richer than its predecessors.
The counoise grape, (pronounced “coon-wahz”), is a Rhone-variety grape, which is 100% Estate grown. Once harvested, it is naturally aged in neutral oak barrels for 22 months. This is a very rare grape, with only about 56 acres of Counoise grapevines growing in California today.
Pairings:
At the girl & the fig we’d recommend pairing Frick Winery, 2014 Estate Counoise with our duck confit (baby turnips, carrots, pearl onions, beluga lentils, red wine syrup) or grilled eggplant (smoked, broccoli rabe, oven-dried tomatoes, crispy polenta, salsa verde).
At home enjoy with roast chicken, vegetable soup, & fresh bread.
Cheers!
